Unite calls new 48-hour strike at British Airways
Members of the Unite union working as cabin crew for British Airways ‘mixed fleet’ have announced a new 48-hour strike. The industrial action is scheduled to start on Tuesday, January 10th. United argues the decision was unavoidable after the airline refused to extend the mandate of an ongoing strike vote to allow for talks to resolve a dispute over pay to continue.
British Airways and Unite meet in London in effort to avoid strike
Representatives from Unite and British Airways are meeting in London today to as the union prepares to call cabin crew out on strike over Christmas. Ahead of the tales, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said: “I am delighted that British Airways has heeded our calls for talks.”

A series of strikes on Southern trains in the UK has begun as a long running dispute over the role of guards on-board. Three days of industrial action began at midnight and is set to continue until Friday morning. Southern said it expected to run nearly two thirds of its services over the period.

Members of the RMT trade union working on Virgin Trains East Coast have begun a 24-hour strike. The action is the latest in a long-running dispute over jobs. The union said about 1,800 members, including train crew and some drivers, were taking part in the industrial action.

Railways workers in France have walked out on strike in a dispute over labour reforms in the country. Unions are concerned over proposed plans to make it easier to hire and fire employees. The strikes are expected to cause disruption across the French rail network today.

Lufthansa cancels 900 flights as strike action bites
German flag-carrier Lufthansa has cancelled more than 900 flights today as cabin crew walk out on strike. Lufthansa said 929 of the 3,000 planned scheduled flights to or from Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Munich would be cancelled today, affecting 113,000 passengers.
Strikes continue at French ports for third day
Passenger at the Port of Calais continued to be hit by disruption this morning as a strike by ferry workers entered a third day. MyFerryLink workers walked out on Monday over the sale of the company’s ferries to the rival firm DFDS Seaways. The sale is expected to be completed tomorrow, when MyFerryLink will also cease operations.
