High speed rail links between Heathrow and Gatwick Airports are to be considered by ministers in coming months in a bid to maximise air capacity.

A proposal for a £5 billion, 180mph (288km/h) train service between the two airports has been put forward, according to reports.

The option would aim to provide cheaper and quicker alternative for travellers.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed that the multibillion-pound scheme is being is studied by ministers.

A DfT spokesman commented: “As part of our work on this we are seeking views on the key issues which need to be addressed, including the importance of a UK hub airport and whether it might be possible to create a virtual hub by improving connectivity between existing airports.
