Southwest Airlines has been cleared to complete its acquisition of AirTran after an investigation found the deal was “not likely to substantially lessen competition”. Officials at the American Department of Justice found the merged firm would be able to offer new service on routes that neither serves today.

Southwest Airlines has confirmed it intends to close its transaction to acquire AirTran, on May 2nd 2011. Southwest also said it anticipates Bob Jordan, Southwest’s executive vice president strategy and planning, to be appointed as president of AirTran to help guide the airline through its integration with Southwest.

The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed it will issue an emergency directive requiring operators of specific early Boeing 737 models to conduct initial and repetitive electromagnetic inspections for fatigue damage. The decision follows a mid-air rupture of the fuselage skin on Southwest Airlines flight 812 on Friday.

Shareholders in AirTran Airways have voted in favour of a merger with Southwest Airlines in a deal worth $1.4 billion. More than 98 per cent of the votes cast and 77.5 percent of shares outstanding voted in favour of the transaction.
