A record-breaking programme of upgrades to Britain’s rail network was successfully completed over the Christmas and New Year period, providing new tracks, new and longer platforms, new lifts and footbridges at stations, upgraded signalling equipment and electrification equipment to allow cleaner, faster electric trains to run.

From 18 January, Network Rail will be carrying out works to repair Whiteball tunnel to prevent the ageing structure from deteriorating. In addition, work will be carried out to expand the drainage system and to improve the embankment around the area as part of a wider programme to alleviate flood risks posed by extreme weather.

Glasgow Central station has unveiled a new memorial stone as part of its Armistice Day service this morning (Monday, November 11). The polished, black granite memorial, dedicated to railway staff who died in WW2 and subsequent conflicts, was unveiled by veterans during the station’s commemorative service and two-minute silence.

Electric trains on the Chase Line will move a step closer this Autumn as Network Rail starts work to electrify the railway between Walsall, Cannock and Rugeley Trent Valley. The project will see 15 miles of railway electrified to connect to existing electric railway at Walsall and Rugeley and provide a better service for passengers using the route.
