Lufthansa unveils Airbus A350-900 delivery plan

Lufthansa has unveiled plans to welcome its first Airbus A350-900s to Munich at the end of 2016. The German flag-carrier has ordered a total of 25 aircraft of this type, which in future will be used on routes from the airline’s Frankfurt and Munich hubs.

With the introduction of its 2015 summer schedule, Lufthansa has reinstated its night flight, LH 405, which departs New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport at 21:55 and arrives in Frankfurt at 11:35 the following day with a Boeing 747-8. The afternoon flight, LH 401, remains constant, with an Airbus A380 departing JFK at 15:55 and arriving in Frankfurt at 05:30 the following morning.

Kay Kratky is expected to replace Jaan Albrecht as chief executive of Austrian Airlines following his endorsement by the supervisory board of parent Lufthansa. The appointment is expected to be confirmed on May 12th. Albrecht has accepted the job as chief executive of SunExpress, a joint venture of Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines.

Lufthansa is offering a further concession to the Vereinigung Cockpit flight crew union in the ongoing round of collective bargaining talks. The union has repeatedly demanded general arbitration. Jaan Albrecht, who has been the chief executive of Austrian Airlines since November 2011, has accepted a position at SunExpress, a joint venture of Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. He will serve as chief executive of the airline, starting on June 1st, 2015. The decision was taken at the supervisory board meeting of SunExpress earlier.

Lufthansa has confirmed it will cancel its 60th anniversary celebrations, originally planned for next month. In a statement earlier the airline said live coverage of the memorial service at the Cologne Cathedral in memory of the victims of flight 4U 95245 would be broadcast instead. That event will take place on the April 17th.

In coordination with the German Federal Aviation Office, other German airlines and the German aviation industry association (Bundesverband der deutschen Luftverkehrswirtschaft), the airlines of the Lufthansa Group are to adopt a new cockpit occupancy procedure as a precautionary measure. Under the new procedure, two authorised persons must be present in the cockpit at all times during a flight.

Deutsche Lufthansa has achieved its operating-result objective for 2014, reporting €954 million operating profit for the year. This was a €255 million, or 37 per cent, improvement on the prior-year result. Following a revision of its original projections owing to negative yield trends and the extraordinary impact of strike action, the company had projected an operating profit for the year of €1 billion in June 2014, provided no additional costs were incurred through further industrial action.

The first Lufthansa Airbus A380 equipped with the airline’s new Premium Economy Class took off from Frankfurt Airport earlier en route to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The aircraft with the registration number D-AIMF is the first A380 in the Lufthansa fleet to offer the new class of travel on board. Houston is the first destination served by this particular aircraft before it takes off to the various A380 destinations within Lufthansa’s worldwide long-haul network.
