Hurricane Maria causes widespread devastation in Dominica
The Caribbean island of Dominica has seen “widespread devastation” following the impact of Hurricane Maria, according to prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit. The storm is currently moving roughly along the same track as Hurricane Irma, the hurricane that devastated parts of the Caribbean earlier this month.

Douglas-Charles Airport in Dominica reopens following tropical storm
Commercial airlines serving the Caribbean island of Dominica are resuming flights to Douglas-Charles Airport following Tropical Storm Erika in late August. Earlier, the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority gave the go-ahead to resume commercial flights.
Dominica renames international airport in honour of former leaders
Dominica’s Melville Hall Airport has been renamed to the Douglas-Charles Airport in order to celebrate and recognise two of the island’s most outstanding compatriots. Prime minister Roosevelt ‘Roosie’ Douglas died in October 2000, while former prime minister Pierre ‘Pierro’ Charles died in January 2004 but both dedicated their lives to improving the financial and economic situation in the country.
Dominica rolls out campaign
The campaign is geared towards encouraging the Dominican community abroad to “bring a friend” when they travel to Dominica for the World Creole Music Festival and Carnival. The DDA has partnered with hotels, restaurants, car rentals, tour operators and other companies to provide discounts on their services for 2 weeks during the festive season.

Dominica sees rise in UK visitors
Dominica has reported a six per cent year-on-year increase in visitors from the UK, as more and more holidaymakers are looking to experience ‘the Nature Island’ of the Caribbean: according to the latest available figures, from January to December 2010 Dominica recorded 4,601 UK arrivals, compared to 4,354 in the previous year.
