Visit St Pete/Clearwater launches augmented reality experience

Visit St Pete/Clearwater has sought to take a lead among US destination marketers with the launch of its interactive augmented reality Two Treasures Tour.

The forward looking technology will enable travellers to sample the award winning beaches of St Pete/Clearwater and exceptional cultural offerings from the comfort of their very own homes.

From pristine beaches to the most prominent arts destinations - including the new Dali Museum - the interactive 3D tour uses a printable marker to initiate a tour of the area when held up to a computer’s webcam.

Users navigate the virtual world via clickable icons, launching tours of top attractions like Clearwater Beach and Caladesi Island while interacting with boats, birds and disembodied images from works by Salvador Dali.

The experience provides users with a unique opportunity to preview the destination’s rich sights, sounds and breadth of experiences.

“With the vast majority of travellers - including more than 600,000 Britons who visit St Pete/Clearwater Florida each year - having researched vacation spots online, we wanted to provide something to augment that experience and make it more enjoyable,” said executive director DT Minich.

“This new, interactive approach complements both our website and our printed Visitor Guide, and it’s definitely a unique way to promote the area.”
