UFO causes Lufthansa flight cancellations

A strike by the UFO trade union in Germany has caused a number of Lufthansa flights to be cancelled today.

Cabin crew at the German flag-carrier walked out this morning at Frankfurt Airport after talks over pay and conditions broke down earlier in the week.

As many as 64 flights were cancelled, with the strike due to last until 13:00 today.

Lufthansa said mainly short- and medium- haul services would be affected at the airport, but there was a possibility long-haul flights may also be disrupted.

UFO had earlier said it would strike, but not when, in order to limit Lufthansa’s chances of preparing alternative crews.

The strike is the latest stage in a year long dispute between the two sides.

UFO is seeking a 5 per cent pay rise for some staff, after three years of stagnant wages.

Lufthansa is offering 3.5 per cent.
