Singapore clinches International Meetining City title

For the fourth consecutive year Singapore has clinched the title of Top International Meetings City in the Union of International Association’s global Rankings, reaffirming its standing as the leading business events destination.

This success can be attributed to the city’s constantly adapting skyline, which has seen the city evolve to encompass more state of the art convention and exhibition facilities. These have added a new dimension to the wealth of options available, with 2011 and beyond poised to see further changes with the opening of Max Atria, a new meeting wing adding over 5,100 sqm of indoor and outdoor meeting space to the existing Singapore Expo, the International cruise terminal, River Safari and Gardens by the Bay. Additionally, this month Singapore also plays host to the South Asian Diaspora Convention, Singapore International Jewellery show and Singapore International Water Week,

With the Asia-Pacific region expecting to attract over 100 million business travel and MICE visitors by 2015, up from 40 million in 2002, the Singapore Tourism Board is setting ambitious targets to ensure the tourism sector in Singapore remains competitive.

The latest Singapore’s overseas Visitors Survey revealed that In 2010, Singapore attracted 3.1 million business travellers which accounted for 27 per cent of all visitors to Singapore, spending about $5.4 billion Singapore dollars. This signifies growths where is matters most – 19.2 per cent and 28.6 per cent respectively over 2009. Singapore’s Business Travel and MICE industry looks set for greater heights as evidenced by more event wins. Within the first half of 2011 alone, there were 12 new World Congresses secured to add to Singapore’s line up of events from 2012 to 2016 in comparison to 14 secured within the whole of 2010. Set against this backdrop, bold targets have been set to ensure that tourism remains a key economic pillar by raising tourism receipts to SGD 30 billion and increasing visitor arrivals to 17 million by 2015.
