Marae stay experience for rugby fans

A new visitor accreditation category of Qualmark, providing confidence for visitors to book marae experiences, was officially unveiled in Auckland last week.
Te Māhurehure Marae, the first marae in New Zealand to meet the criteria for Qualmark’s Marae Stay Experience, hosted the launch of the scheme at a reception in Orakei.
Intending Rugby World Cup 2011 visitors from Wales, South Africa, England and Japan have already been in touch about staying at the Ngapuhi marae, says marae spokesperson Tracey Panapa.
“The level of interest we’ve had is very encouraging - and that’s before we estart promoting our offer.
“Having Qualmark accreditation is a fantastic opportunity for the marae.
“We’re confident the initiative will live on well beyond the Rugby World Cup.”
Qualmark’s Chairman Chief Executive, Paul Yeo congratulated the marae on getting their accreditation.
“The Qualmark ‘Marae Stay Experience’ presents a timely opportunity to provide the assurance for visitors to book and buy this authentic Maori experience with confidence.”
Te Māhurehure Marae and Te Hana Te Ao Marama Marae; also in the greater Auckland region, have met the criteria for Qualmark’s ‘Marae Stay Experience’, while a number of other marae are currently working on getting official accreditation.
Te Māhurehure Marae offer a one night sleepover at the marae with all sleeping requirements provided. In addition, visitors will experience a traditional hangi (feast) cooked in Mother Earth (Papatuanuku) and be entertained by traditional Maori performances and songs.
