A baby was born on Iberia’s IB3721 flight from Malabo in Equatorial Guinea to Madrid at 03:30 h., Spanish time, a little more than two hours after take-off in the West African country, a former Spanish colony.

The birth on the Airbus A319 registered as EC-KMD was assisted by midwife, a pediatrician and a family doctor among the passengers, backed by Iberia cabin staff. The delivery was very quick, and the new passenger weighed 3 kg.

The physicians on board determined that there was no need to alter the route, and the flight landed at 07:05 h in Madrid where an ambulance was waiting to take the mother and daughter to hospital.

The baby was the fifth baby to be born aboard Iberia aircraft, and the second on a the Madrid-Malabo route. Others were born on routes between Madrid and Havana, Madrid and Bogota, and Moscow and Tokyo.

The Airbus A319 used for flight IB3721 Malabo-Madrid joined the Iberia fleet in 2008 and its named “Petirrojo” for an endangered Spanish species of bird, in keeping with Iberia’s policy of publicizing conservation and environmental issues.
