Virgin Atlantic is still keen to acquire bmi from owner Lufthansa as it seeks to revive its fortunes. In an interview with Reuters news agency, chief executive Steve Ridway said Virgin Atlantic was still very much involved with the ongoing sales process of the carrier.

Virgin Atlantic has announced the development of a world-first low carbon aviation fuel with just half the carbon footprint of the standard fossil fuel alternative. According to the carrier, the partnership with LanzaTech represents a “breakthrough in aviation fuel technology” that will see waste gases from industrial steel production being captured, fermented and chemically converted using Swedish Biofuels technology for use as a jet fuel.

Sir Richard Branson has said the world faces “the mother of all recessions” unless much more is done to encourage the development of renewable energy. Addressing delegates at the third annual Six Senses Slow Life Symposium at Soneva Fushi in the Maldives, the founder and chairman of the Virgin Group said governments had to provide additional incentives to support the adoption of alternative fuel sources.

Virgin Atlantic has recorded a pre-tax profit of £18.5 million for the financial year, but warned rising fuel costs and weakening consumer confidence in the UK could take a toll in coming months. Revenues at the carrier – which was last year recognised as the World’s Leading Airline Business Class and World’s Leading Transatlantic Airline by the the World Travel Awards - grew 13 per cent to £2.7 billion.

That is according to Virgin Atlantic, which today released data suggesting the figure could be as high as £222 million annually.
