US Congress hits aviation with new fees
Aviation could be among the losers from a new budget deal agreed following negotiations in the United States congress. In a rare show of bipartisanship, the Democrat and Republican parties agreed a budget for the next two years which should remove the threat of another government shutdown in January.

Illinois announces new UK partners to boost profile
The Illinois Office of Tourism has appointed three agencies to handle its advertising, public relations, and sales and marketing for the remainder of 2012 and 2013. JWT, who has worked on the account for the past eight years, will continue to handle advertising, Fleishman-Hillard London will take on PR, and Cellet Travel Services will manage sales and marketing to the trade.

United States secretary of the interior, Ken Salazar, has confirmed the Statue of Liberty will close for a year to undergo refurbishments. The $27.25 million renovation – which includes long-planned safety and other critical facility renovations – will begin in late October.

Yellowstone River hit by oil leak
Hundreds of barrels of oil have leaked into the Yellowstone River in the United States after an ExxonMobil operated pipeline ruptured. As many as 1,000 barrels of oil are feared to have leaked into the river following the accident, which occurred downstream from Yellowstone national park, a major tourist attraction in the US.

San Francisco expected to generate $350 million from hosting Pow Wow
Organisers of International Pow Wow estimate that hosting the influential travel convention in San Francisco will generate an extra $350 million from tourism for the city over the next three years. Around 3,500 exhibitors and 450 media attended this year’s event.

US hotel industry posts key increases
The U.S. hotel industry posted increases in all three key performance measurements during October 2010, according to data from STR. In year-over-year measurements, the industry’s occupancy was up 6.9 percent to 61.3 percent. Average daily rate ended the month with a 1.2-percent increase to US$100.89. Revenue per available room for the month rose 8.2 percent to finish at US$61.89.

US inbound tourist numbers rise 12 Percent in first eight months of 2010
The U.S. Department of Commerce has announced that for the first eight months of 2010, 40.2 million international visitors travelled to the United States, a 12 percent increase over the same period in 2009. Spending reached $88.2 billion for the period.
