American carriers line up to offer Cuba services
United Airlines has submitted its formal application to the US department of transportation for authority to provide service from four of its largest US gateway cities – Newark/New York, Houston, Washington, D.C. and Chicago – to Havana’s José Martí International Airport. At the same time American Airlines issued proposal to operate scheduled services, including ten daily frequencies to Havana from American’s Latin America gateway hub in Miami.
United Airlines to launch longest commercial flight on San Francisco-Singapore route
United Airlines will introduce daily non-stop flights between its San Francisco International Airport hub and Singapore’s Changi Airport, from June 1st, 2016, subject to government approval. United will be the first airline to offer nonstop service between San Francisco and Singapore, and this will be the only non-stop service to the US from Singapore.
Olson takes over top communications role at United Airlines
United Airlines has appointed James Olson to the role of senior vice president of corporate communications, bringing to the airline 25 years of public relations and employee engagement experience. He has worked for several of the world’s most admired and innovative companies, including Starbucks, US Airways and Nissan.
United Airlines records $4.5bn profit for financial 2015
United Airlines has reported its fourth-quarter and full-year 2015 financial results, revealing full-year net income of $4.5 billion, or $11.88 per diluted share, excluding special items. Including special items, UAL reported full-year net income of $7.3 billion.
Heart transplant for United Airlines chief
United Airlines president and chief executive officer Oscar Munoz has undergone a heart transplant, an airline statement confirmed. He is presently in recovery following the operation.
United Airlines rolls out iPhones to airport staff
United has announced the airline will equip its customer service representatives in the company’s US-based hubs with Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus, enabling agents to meet customers’ needs more quickly while having access to additional operational information at their fingertips. United will begin distributing the devices to its more than 6,000 hub-based customer service representatives next year.
United Airlines rolls out enhanced club lounges
United Airlines will unveil new United Club lounges in both Atlanta and San Francisco, offering customers modern designs with stunning panoramic views of the airfields. Also on offer is comfortable seating to work or relax, fresh and healthy food choices, complimentary beverages and plentiful power outlets throughout.
United records net income of $1.7 billion in third quarter
United Airlines has reported third-quarter net income of $1.7 billion, or $4.53 per diluted share, excluding special items. Including special items, UAL reported third-quarter net income of $4.8 billion. These results include a nonrecurring $3.2 billion non-cash gain associated with the reversal of the company’s income tax valuation allowance.
Hart takes over leadership of United Airlines
United Continental Holdings has confirmed its president and chief executive officer, Oscar Munoz, is on medical leave following a heart attack he suffered on October 15th. At this time, it is too soon to know the course of treatment and timing of recovery. In the interim, the UAL board of directors has named Brett Hart, currently United’s executive vice president and general counsel, as acting chief executive.
United to resume Newcastle-Newark service
United Airlines has launched its nonstop service between Newcastle and its New York hub, Newark Liberty International Airport, will return in summer 2016. The flights will operate six times weekly during the period May 26, 2016 to September 6, 2016.
Smisek steps down from United amid corruption allegations
United Airlines chief executive Jeff Smisek has stepped down from the role amid an investigation into corruption at the carrier. Federal authorities are investigating whether Smisek sanctioned an unprofitable flight in order to benefit the head of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.
United Airlines to bring Boeing Dreamliner to London-Los Angeles route
United Airlines has announced it will enhance the on board experience for its customers travelling from London Heathrow to its hub at Los Angeles International Airport, by introducing the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to the daily non-stop service from April 6th, 2016. The visionary design of the Dreamliner offers customers many features for increased comfort such as large windows, spacious overhead storage and modern LED lighting to simulate a full day, helping passengers adjust their internal clock on the trans-Atlantic flight.
