Passengers injured in Shannon airport emergency landing
Fourteen people were injured following severe turbulence which forced a transatlantic United flight to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport in Ireland.
Kirby takes up role of United Airlines president
United Continental Holdings has announced that Scott Kirby has been named president of United Airlines. In this newly created role, Kirby will assume responsibility for United’s operations, marketing, sales, alliances, network planning and revenue management.
New senior leadership for United Airlines
United has announced the addition of two key members to the company’s executive leadership team with the appointment of Andrew Levy as executive vice president and chief financial officer and Julia Haywood as executive vice president and chief commercial officer. Gerry Laderman, who has been serving as acting chief financial officer, will continue in his previous role as senior vice president, finance, procurement and treasurer.

iPass has entered into an agreement with United Airlines to provide customers with Wi-Fi access to the United Airlines Wi-Fi inflight network. United Airlines passengers who are iPass customers will benefit from a secure, frictionless Wi-Fi experience as they move from the airport terminal to United Airlines aircraft and beyond, utilising a single service.

United Continental has confirmed that Edward “Ted” Philip is joining its Board of Directors. Philip brings to United nearly three decades of leadership across the technology, health care and financial services sectors.
United Havana flights win tentative US state department approval
This fall, United Airlines customers will have a historic opportunity to board one of the first commercial flights from the United States to Havana, Cuba in more than a half century. On Thursday, the US department of transportation tentatively awarded the airline non-stop flights to the Cuban capital from its global gateways in New York/Newark and Houston.
United Airlines boosts United States west coast flights
United Airlines will increase the frequency of its flights from London/Heathrow to both its San Francisco and Los Angeles hubs. For winter 2016-17, the airline will operate a second daily Heathrow-San Francisco nonstop service, effective October 30th, 2016.
United Airlines strikes deal with Association of Flight Attendants
United and the Association of Flight Attendants announced earlier they have reached an agreement on terms of a joint contract that would bring the airline’s more than 25,000 flight attendants together into a single work group. The agreement is subject to approval by the Joint Master Executive Council, including all local presidents, after which it will become a tentative agreement and will be put out for ratification by flight attendants.
United unveils new long-haul business class seat
United Airlines has unveiled its all-new United Polaris business class, the airline’s most significant product transformation in more than a decade. The new seat features a reimagined, sleep-enhancing, departure-to-landing experience for intercontinental travellers. The new seat will debut on the B777-300ER deliveries at the end of 2016.
Strong US dollar drives down profits at United Airlines
United Airlines has reported first-quarter net income of $435 million, excluding special items, earnings per share of $1.23 per diluted share and pre-tax earnings of $688 million. During the first quarter of 2016, the company repurchased $1.5 billion worth of its common stock, representing approximately eight per cent of shares outstanding. “I am extremely proud of United’s nearly 86,000 aviation professionals for their contributions to these strong results – including the improvements in our reliability, customer satisfaction and financial performance,” said Oscar Munoz, president and chief executive officer of United Airlines.
United Airlines and Air New Zealand sign code-share deal
United Airlines and Air New Zealand have announced a joint venture revenue-sharing agreement, deepening the partnership between the two airlines, which are both members of Star Alliance. Under the new revenue-sharing agreement, the carriers will more closely coordinate sales and marketing in order to offer their mutual customers more travel options between the mainland US and New Zealand, as well as to other destinations throughout the airlines’ route networks.
Munoz to return to United leadership following heart attack
United Continental Holdings has confirmed president and chief executive Oscar Munoz plans to return to those roles on a full-time basis on March 14th, 2016 and resume all of his duties and responsibilities at that time. Munoz was forced to step aside last year following a heart attack in October.
