Replacement engines ordered for A380 fleet
Plans are being drawn up to replace as many as 40 Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines on Airbus A380 aircraft around the world, according to Australian airline Qantas. The superjumbos have come under the spotlight in recent weeks following an engine failure on Qantas Flight QF32 which forced the aircraft into an emergency landing in Singapore.
Sharp rise in profits at Lufthansa
Lufthansa has reported a three-fold increase in profits, adding weight to expectations of a recovery in the global aviation sector. The German flag-carrier reported third quarter net profits of €628 million - far higher than the €390 million forecast by analysts.
Lufthansa appoints Christoph Franz as CEO
In a widely expected move Lufthansa has appointed deputy chairman Christoph Franz as its new chief executive office. Mr Franz, who has served as vice chairman for over a year, will replace Wolfgang Mayrhuber from January 2011.
German aviation tax comes into force
German passenger carriers have been left reeling, as the national government implemented a new levy on flight tickets. As part of a wider austerity drive, German chancellor Angela Merkel stated the tax would raise €1 billion by 2014.

Lufthansa Cargo plane crash in Riyadh
According to the latest reports, a Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 freighter crashed yesterday morning at 11.38 a.m. (local time) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The aircraft, coded Flight LH 8460, was on a flight to Riyadh from Frankfurt, Germany. The plane was piloted by a two-man crew, according to initial reports. Both pilots are being treated in hospital.

Lufthansa has raised the pet tourism luxury stakes several notches with the opening of a first-class lounge dedicated to all animals from pampered pooches to fluffy felines.
Lufthansa reaches agreement with pilots
Lufthansa has reached agreement with pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit in a long running dispute over job security at the airline. In exchange for a pay freeze until March 2011, the German flag-carrier has stated it will not arbitrarily migrate positions to cheaper European subsidiaries.
IATA attacks German departure tax
The International Air Transport Association has added its voice to the chorus of disapproval following the announcement of a new departure tax by the German government. Already branded a “black day” for aviation by Lufthansa chief executive Wolfgang Mayrhuber, the IATA has called the decision “short-sighted” and “irresponsible”.

BMI pins hopes on £100m restructure to thwart break-up
BMI expects a major restructuring programme will halve losses this year, and save the airline from imminent break up. The £100m cost savings aim to reverse the fortunes of the Lufthansa-owned carrier, which lost £156m last year. These will include 800 redundancies, cutting 10 aircraft and axing unprofitable routes.
