India: Kerala fishermen reject plans for surfers’ paradise
Fishermen in the regions of Kovalam and Vizhinjam in the southern Indian state of Kerala have urged authorities to halt the construction of an artificial reef funded by central government Tsunami Rehabilitation Funds. In an attempt to attract surfers to the area and turn Kovalam into a year-round tourism destination, the state government plans to build the reef 150 metres from the tourist beach.

India plans tourist boost for 2010
The sharp falls in tourist numbers to India have levelled out, according to the tourism minister. Kumari Selja said tourist numbers had dropped by 7% to 4.2m in the 10 months to October compared to the same period last year. Foreign earnings however have risen and are up by 4.1% over the same period.

Girl rescued from Indian Ocean but 152 feared dead
A teenage girl has been rescued from the Indian Ocean, the only apparent survivor from an airliner crash off the coast of east Africa in which 152 people are feared dead.The 14-year-old, whose first name is Bahia, was found floating 10 miles out to sea from the Comoros islands off where the Airbus A310 operated by Yemenia Air was trying to land.
