A tough market and volatile prices have resulted in Delta Airlines turning in a weak set of quarterly figures. The Atlanta-based airline reported a net loss of $257m, while total revenue fell 23 percent to $7bn.

Delta Air Lines today announced that it has installed Wi-Fi on nearly half of its domestic mainline fleet, making the airline the world’s leading provider of in-flight connectivity. Of the more than 300 airplanes Delta operates on U.S. routes, 139 are equipped with Gogo® Inflight Internet, including the entire MD-88 fleet. In addition, the MD-90 fleet will be complete by the end of May with the remainder of the domestic fleet scheduled for completion by September. Delta offers more Wi-Fi onboard than any airline worldwide.

Delta Air Lines is expanding its global network to offer customers nonstop flights to Dallas’ Love Field Airport. Effective July 6, 2009, Delta will offer three new daily round-trip flights between its Memphis, Tenn. hub and Dallas’ downtown airport, connecting in-town Dallas customers to the world’s largest airline network.

The two US aviation heavyweights cited lower fuel prices and schedule cuts helping them to fight off sharp falls in demand.Stockmarkets cheered the results with Delta rising 19 percent and United up by 13 percent, as investors saw this as the worst over for the aviation downturn.
