Airline mergers not always great news
With recent news of a merger between American Airlines and US Airways, the airline industry seems to be headed toward four “super-airlines” dominating the market. Recent mergers have consolidated brands and routes across the country, but passengers do not benefit.
American Airlines seals deal with US Airways
American Airlines parent AMR Corporation has agreed a merger with US Airways, ending weeks of speculation a deal was imminent. The boards of directors of both companies have unanimously approved a definitive merger agreement under which the companies will combine to create a premier global carrier, which will have an implied combined equity value of approximately $11 billion.
American Airlines signs up Republic Airlines to operate regional routes
American Airlines has signed a 12-year capacity purchase agreement with Republic Airways to provide large regional jet flying for the first time in the company’s history. This agreement, which is subject to court approval, was enabled by the new pilot contract.
American Airlines inks codeshare deal with Qatar Airways
American Airlines has signed an agreement with Doha, Qatar-based Qatar Airways to codeshare on each other’s flights providing new growth opportunities for American in the Middle East and for Qatar in the United States.

It’s a new year and a fresh new look for American Airlines as the company today unveils a new logo and exterior for its planes, including the already delivered Flagship Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. In addition, American plans to continue taking delivery of new planes this year as part of its historic orders for 550 new aircraft.

First Class and Business Class customers travelling internationally on American Airlines can now indulge in a host of new upgrades. The new premium in-flight experience has launched onboard American’s 777-200ER, 767-300ER and 757-200 aircraft flying in Europe, Asia and long-haul Latin America markets.
American Airlines signs pilots deal with US Airways
American Airlines and US Airways have signed a ‘pilot’s agreement’ which could potentially smooth the path of any merger between the two airlines. The two United Stated-based carriers confirmed they had completed discussions with the Allied Pilots Association and the US Airlines Pilots Association, with a deal now in place in the event of a merger.
American Airlines launches new direct US-Martinique flight
Travellers in the United States will have an easier time getting to Martinique in 2013 as American Airlines will launch new weekly service to the island beginning April 6th. The new flights, which represent the first non-stop air service between Martinique and the US mainland since 2008, will operate on Saturdays out of Miami.
American Airlines receives first 777-300ER from Boeing
Boeing has delivered to American Airlines its first 777-300ER jetliner as part of the airline’s fleet modernisation effort and global network strategy. The delivery makes the Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier the first US airline to add the 777-300ER to its fleet.

American Airlines has announced a new service between Dublin and New York. The new service will commence in June 2013 and will be serviced by a Boeing 757.

American Airlines has revealed plans to bring more than 1,500 new flight attendants onboard over the next year. American will begin the process of recruitment and hiring in November, with the first new-hire class beginning training in January 2013.
