American Airlines parent AMR Corporation has agreed a merger with US Airways, ending weeks of speculation a deal was imminent. The boards of directors of both companies have unanimously approved a definitive merger agreement under which the companies will combine to create a premier global carrier, which will have an implied combined equity value of approximately $11 billion.

American Airlines and US Airways have signed a ‘pilot’s agreement’ which could potentially smooth the path of any merger between the two airlines. The two United Stated-based carriers confirmed they had completed discussions with the Allied Pilots Association and the US Airlines Pilots Association, with a deal now in place in the event of a merger.
