Tornadoes hit New York city

Two tornadoes have hit New York City’s borough of Queens and Brooklyn, causing damage to residential areas and power cuts. No serious injuries have been reported.

The first storm, with winds up to 70mph (113km/h), struck Breezy Point on Queens’ Rockaway Peninsula.

The National Weather Service confirmed the second tornado hit the Canarsie neighborhood in Brooklyn moments after the first storm had hit.

Tornadoes used to be rare in New York, but they have become increasingly common in recent years

The storm delayed the U.S. Open tennis tournament with the women’s final, scheduled for Saturday night, being postponed until Sunday. Meanwhile the second of two men’s semi-finals was suspended on Saturday.
