Passengers will welcome this week the start of a £100,000 programme to improve Chesterfield station. This project, financed by East Midlands Trains with some funding from the National Station Improvement Programme (Department for Transport funding) and the cycling fund, will deliver a better experience for passengers using Chesterfield station. 

Once complete, the project will provide a much improved station environment, featuring a fully integrated forecourt with the front of the station being resurfaced and taxi access improved. There is also provision for an extra 48 cycling spaces, which is part of East Midlands Trains’ wider commitment to deliver greener travel and provide over 1000 new bike spaces across its whole route by summer 2014. Passengers will also benefit from new customer information screens and free Wifi.

Neil Micklethwaite, Customer Service & Commercial Director for East Midlands Trains, said: “We are pleased to be delivering this significant project to provide a much improved station for passengers at Chesterfield. This first phase of improvement starts this week with a focus on the outside of the station to deliver better access into the station, extra bike spaces and the installation of the latest passenger information technology, including free Wifi. We are also considering plans to refurbish the ticket office in 2015

We are committed to improving passengers’ travel experience so that their rail journey will be comfortable, convenient and easy, starting with their station.”

Approvals are currently underway for the second phase of this project that will take place in 2015 with the refurbishment of the ticket office, including the introduction of a lower ticket window. Visually impaired passengers will also be able to use new tactile maps later this year.

The improvement work will be carried out with minimal disruption to passengers and is due for completion in early March 2014.
