Gran Hotel Son Net to plant vineyard and develop home grown produce

The authentic Majorca, far away from the famous “Ballermann” awaits guests at the Gran Hotel Son Net, in the green heart of the Balearic Island. The historical finca from the 17th century lies at the foot of the Sierra Tramuntra, only 25 minutes away from the capital Palma. General Manager Bjorn Wild made it his task to maintain the authenticity of the region and its traditions. His new project is to plant its own organic vineyard this year and grow its own produce and keep livestock on its estate. Son Net will dedicate an entire side of the estate to the planting of the island’s historic grape variety, the Malvasia, which is typical to the Sierra Tramuntana region. The Malvasia grape is characterised by its strong, fruity aroma and is first documented on the island around the 15th and 16th century when it was probably introduced from Italy. In order for guests to enjoy the noble wine in an adequate ambiance, the centre of the hotel’s gourmet restaurant Oleum is decorated with the estate’s original olive oil press. The hotel has also been working on recuperating ancient olive trees to make its own olive oil and to extend a market garden dedicated to the ecological growing of fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs for the hotel’s kitchen. Livestock have also been re-introduced with sheep grazing happily in the fields below the hotel and chickens laying fresh eggs for hotel guests. Room rates at the Gran Hotel Son Net start at 205 Euro per night, inclusive breakfast. Further information at www.sonnet.es or via telephone +34 971 147000.

Bjorn Wild, General Manager of Gran Hotel Son Net says “This wine initiative demonstrates the hotel’s support for Mallorca’s local wine industry. Our objective is to provide the best selection of local wines complemented by international labels. The home grown produce and livestock projects complete our task to regenerate the land around the Son Net Estate”.

Gran Hotel Son Net is divided up into one main building and various out buildings and comprises 31 rooms and suites. Before the Boutique hotel was opened in 1998, all buildings were restored and refurbished with loving care. Two restaurants, a spectacular 30 metres swimming pool as well as the Beauty and Wellness Centre “La Fuente” are available to the guests.
