Gleneagles welcomes golfing world to Ryder Cup
The 40th Ryder Cup is underway in Scotland, as Gleneagles welcomes the European and American teams to the home of golf, the PGA Centenary Course.
The iconic global golf tournament will welcome tens of thousands of visitors over the next three days, while an audience of millions will watch around the world on television.
Set within the gentle beauty of 850 acres of Perthshire countryside, the stunning Gleneagles is the perfect host for the Ryder Cup.
With an array of activities available on site; from the three championship golf courses and award winning spa to outdoor pursuits including falconry, gundog training and horse riding, the location welcomes guests year round.
Arguably the greatest event in golf will be played out on a course designed by arguably the game’s greatest – 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus.
First known as the Monarch’s Course from its 1993 opening, the PGA Centenary has matured to offer a fantastic risk-reward test perfectly suited for the matchplay format of The Ryder Cup.
Gleneagles is recognised as Scotland’s Leading Resort by the World Travel Awards.
Europe, led by Paul McGinley will be looking to win a third straight trophy following the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.
During the last tournament, Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, saw an extraordinary comeback by Europe, under captain José María Olazábal of Spain.
The European team were down 10-4 after 14 matches, with two four-ball matches still on the course and 12 singles matches to be played the next day.
Despite being down 10-6 going into the final day Europe came back to win by 14½ points to 13½.
Out of the 12 points up for grabs on the final day Europe won 8½ points with the U.S. winning only 3½ points, in one of the most memorable cups to date.
With world number one, Rory Mcllroy, in his side, McGinley and his team are favourites going into the tournament on home turf.
American captain Tom Watson is without injured icon Tiger Woods, but still has a great deal of talent to call on, from Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler, to hardened pros Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk.
The event will conclude on Sunday, with more information here.
