easyJet submitted a revised expression of interest in a restructured Alitalia.
The move comes as aviation insiders prepare for a winter of consolidation in the sector as rising fuel prices challenge the finances of weaker carriers.
easyJet said its submission, which is in response to the new Italian government’s ongoing sales process, is consistent with its existing strategy for Italy.
“Given the nature of the process, the content of the expression of interest is subject to confidentiality,” added a statement.
“There is no certainty at this stage that any transaction will proceed and easyJet will provide a further update in due course, if and when appropriate.”
Alitalia has been under special administration since last year after workers rejected a rescue plan.
Lufthansa and Wizz Air have submitted previous submissions of interest.
