Cathay Pacific upgrades long-haul product

Cathay Pacific is celebrating a revolution in its long-haul product that sees a brand new seat, cabin design and in-flight entertainment
system introduced in the First, Business and Economy Class cabins.The product will be installed on all the airline’s new deliveries and also retrofitted on Cathay Pacific long-haul aircraft already in operation.  The new product was launched in 2007 and is currently available on one flight a day between London Heathrow and Hong Kong. 

Economy Class cabin
Cathay Pacific’s new Economy Class seat is the first in the airline industry to offer a fixed living space and recline without intruding on passengers seated behind. The new seat redefines the form and function of the traditional Economy Class seat. With a “fixed back” design, which allows the passenger to recline without encroaching on the personal space of others.

In addition, the seat frame and structure has been designed to maximise knee and shin clearance and remove awkward fixtures and fittings that undermine comfort. The seat, designed and manufactured by B/E Aerospace, features exclusive LEAPLive Back? technology, designed for an award-winning office chair that provides dynamic and continuous support for the spine in all positions. Other features include a bigger personal television and the introduction of audio and video entertainment on demand.

Business Class cabin
The new luxury Business Class cabin has been designed to meet the most stated requirements of business travellers - sleeping comfort and privacy. The cabin employs a “fishbone” layout that allows unrestricted aisle access from each seat. Each passenger can enjoy their own private area in which space has been maximised in all seating modes.

The Business Class product features a new seat, designed and manufactured by US-based B/E Aerospace that transforms to a totally flat bed. Ergonomically tested foams further improve sitting/lounging comfort and promote restful sleep. Simple seat controls allow full adjustment, including lumbar support, while a two-way massage function aids blood circulation. Passengers are in full control of their own living area which features generous stowage space with all utilities, including a 15” screen and noise-reducing headset, within easy reach. Each seat is equipped with a 110V AC power supply for personal electronic devices and attention has been paid to providing good lighting for passengers who wish to work. Mood lighting in the cabin and new soft furnishings and catering equipment add to the overall enhancement and the use of lighter fabrics and metallic finishes help to create a feeling of space within the seat partitions.


First Class cabin
The new First Class cabin highlights the importance of Cathay Pacific’s premium passengers to the airline by providing more space and more privacy, creating the feel of a private relaxation suite. An innovative new seat can be used as an armchair, a chaise longue or an extra long and wide bed. The bed is believed to be the largest provided on any commercial airline and added comfort comes courtesy of a plush mattress, duvet and lumbar massage function. An ottoman in the suite and an extendable table means passengers can invite friends or colleagues to join them in their suite in-flight. These combined features create the ambience and convenience of a five-star hotel room.

In addition to the seat, close attention has been paid to all the other factors that go to make up the ultimate travel experience. Subtle lighting provides the right ambience within the suite, while passengers can enjoy a cinematic experience with the bigger, highly adjustable personal television. Three contiguous working surfaces and in-seat power are provided, allowing the suite to be quickly converted into a workstation. All cabin baggage can be stowed in the suite itself, providing easier access to personal possessions. Elsewhere in the cabin, every effort has been made to create a welcoming ambience and a refined travel experience, from the design of the entryways and spacious VIP washroom to the soft furnishings and in-flight service equipment.

The overall design concept
Cathay Pacific worked with leading transportation design consultant Design Q to come up with the overall long-haul product design concept, with the key aim being to design a fresh, inspirational interior for all three cabin classes.
