Stoweflake Spa Introduces LaStone Therapy To Vermont

The Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa in Stowe is the first Vermont establishment approved to practice the innovative and powerful healing technique of LaStone Therapy, a hot and cold stone massage.

The goal of LaStone Therapy is to open up the energy channels of the body to facilitate self-healing and body-mind awareness. By combining Swedish massage with hot and cold stones, the circulatory system is stimulated and relaxed, a sensation known as “vascular gymnastics.” The stones are the medium while the hot and cold temperatures provide the message.

After a series of gentle stretches and massage, two rows of warm stones are placed on the treatment table to align with both sides of the spine and then covered with a soft towel. Stones of varying sizes and weights are placed gently on strategic energy wellsprings, including the seven chakras. Warm stones are used for gentle, soothing massage, as well as placed between toes, and cupped in palms.

Altogether, 54 basalt river stones are heated to a core temperature of 140 degrees. These are placed on the skin to bring the blood to the surface. In some treatments, 18 frozen marble stones are used to exert the opposite effect. The stimulation and relaxation of the circulatory system produces sedative and re-energizing responses in the body.

For centuries stones have been used for their healing properties, according to Mary Hannigan, founder of LaStone Therapy. “Our therapy takes the process one dimension further by adding stroking and Swedish massage. LaStone Therapy goes beyond the physical experience and enters a deeper realm. It addresses the relationship between health and well-being by creating a positive approach to the body-mind-spirit philosophy. It provides a very peaceful and powerful balance on the road to self-awareness.”
