America warns travellers over possible Bangkok danger
American citizens in Thailand have been warned terrorists may be looking to conduct attacks against tourist in Bangkok in the “near future”.
Those in the area are urged to exercise caution when visiting public areas where large groups of Western tourists gather in Bangkok.
“United States citizens are encouraged to maintain a heightened awareness when out in public; be alert for unattended packages/bags in public/crowded places and report any suspicious behaviour to the nearest law enforcement personnel,” read a statement from the Embassy of the United States in Thailand.
“We also encourage you to keep a low profile in public areas, particularly areas frequented by foreign tourists.”
Bangkok has been hit by several small scale bombs in recent years in what are thought to have been politically motivated attacks.
Officials at the UK Foreign Office issued similar advice.
A statement read: “It is not uncommon for political demonstrations to take place in Thailand, including in central Bangkok.
“You should avoid demonstrations and any other protests.”
However, the FCO is not advising against travel to the capital.
