Zipcar Charges Up Car Sharing in Chicago with Electric Vehicle Pilot Program.

Zipcar, Inc., the world’s leading car-sharing network, announced its first-ever Zipcar Future Metropolis Index, which measures, ranks and celebrates top U.S. cities according to five dimensions:  sustainability, innovation, vibrancy, efficiency and livability. Based on its strong performance across all dimensions, the City of San Francisco topped the list for 2012. Zipcar Chairman and CEO Scott Griffith personally delivered the award to Mayor Ed Lee yesterday.

The new Zipcar program will provide West Hollywood residents, businesses and visitors with increased access to affordable, convenient transportation options that are proven to reduce congestion and emissions.

Zipcar, Inc., the world’s leading car sharing network, today announced the completion of its option to purchase a majority ownership interest in Barcelona-based Catalunya Carsharing S.A., known as Avancar.  With this transaction completed, Zipcar is now the majority shareholder for the company with a controlling stake of more than 60 percent. This deal builds on Zipcar’s initial equity investment in Avancar which was announced in December 2009.

Zipcar has announced a pilot in San Francisco that includes full size cargo vans through a new offering called Zipvan. The vans will allow consumers to transport items too bulky for cars or pickup trucks, and give small businesses a new and more affordable option for transporting goods.
