Economic uncertainty hits sales at Premier Inn

Whitbread has blamed “weak trading conditions” in the UK economy for a slowdown in sales. The company, the largest hotel operator in the UK, said sales at Premier Inn properties open at least a year fell by 4.6 per cent in the first quarter of the year.

Whitbread – which operates Premier Inn and Costa Coffee in the UK – has reported strong sales growth for the 50 weeks to February 11th 2012. In total the group recorded an 11 per cent increase in total sales and confirmed it will create 10,000 jobs in the UK over the next three years.

Profits at Whitbread jumped by 43 per cent to £151m in the six months to September, following a surge in demand at the Costa Coffee chain. Continued expansion and a strong advertising spend also saw profits rise at the Premier Inn chain.
