The over 1,000 representatives from UNWTO’s Members States and Affiliate Members attending the 19th session of the UNWTO General Assembly have unanimously adopted proposed reforms in the organization, allowing it to become more responsive, efficient, and relevant in the face of current and future challenges (Gyeongju, Republic of Korea,October 10-13, 2011).

Jamaica elected to UNWTO leadership positions

Jamaica’s position as a leader in the global tourism arena has been further bolstered after the destination was elected to serve in several key leadership positions within the United Nations World Tourism Organisation. Tourism minister Edmund Bartlett revealed: “Jamaica has been elected to serve as vice president for the 19th General Assembly of the UNWTO now underway in South Korea and as Jamaica’s representative I will again preside over several sessions of the Assembly.”

United Nations World Tourism Organisation secretary-general, Taleb Rifai, has called for continued international support of the tourism sector in Japan. “It is vital that we continue to work together to share accurate information on Japan’s recovery, provide support to those areas most affected and pass on the message that the situation has returned to normalcy in most of the areas which suffered the impact of the March earthquake,” explained Rifai.

The Moroccan minister of tourism & handicraft, Yassir Zenagui, has received an Open Letter from the World Travel & Tourism Council and United Nations World Tourism Organisation highlighting the importance tourism for national and international economic development. Zenagui received the letter on behalf of the chief of the government of Morocco, Abbas El Fassi, as the Africa Hotel Investment Conference held in Casablanca, Morocco.
