Britain votes to leave European Union
British and European hospitality organisations rushed to assess a new reality this morning, as the UK voted to leave the European Union. With the final results now declared, some 52 per cent of voters chose to leave the EU. Better than expected showings for the Leave campaign in most areas of England and Wales outweighing strong Remain showings in London, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

UK breaks tourism records in first quarter of 2016
Figures out today show that the first three months of the year have set a record for inbound visits to the UK. The Office for National Statistics figures show visits from January to March were up six per cent on the same period last year to 7.36 million, with visitors spending £3.64 billion. Strong growth was seen in particular from EU countries with 5.27 million visits, up seven per cent on the first three months of 2015 and setting a record first quarter.
UK inbound tourism numbers break records in 2015
New figures out today show that 2015 set a new record for inbound tourism to the UK with 35.8 million visits, four per cent up on 2014 and the sixth consecutive year of growth. Comparing growth over the last five years shows that there were six million more visits in 2015 than 2010, an increase of 20 per cent. Visitors spent £21.8 billion in the UK last year in line with 2014’s record breaking figure.
Isle of Man welcomes rising visitor numbers
The Isle of Man passenger survey has revealed a 6.5 per cent increase in tourist visitors to the Island in 2015, rising to 134,610. Marking the seventh year of continuous growth in tourist visits to the Island, the survey found that in the last calendar year visitors added around £10 million to the Island economy, with an average of £378 spent per visit.
Chinese visitors flock to Britain
Latest figures from VisitBritain show that visits from China were up 37 per cent in the first nine months of 2015, smashing previous records. There were 214,000 visits from China from January to September, beating the number of visits for all of 2014, with figures for the last quarter of 2015 still to come. Spend was up four per cent over the same period, to £435 million.
British Tourism Authority appoints new leadership for England
The British Tourist Authority has appointed a new interim director, England, Andrew Stokes. Stokes has spent the last 14 years as chief executive of Marketing Manchester where he transformed the organisation from being totally focused on tourism to one working across sectors responsible for branding, promotion and marketing the city.
UK to introduce two-year multiple-entry visa for Chinese tourists
Government officials in the UK have announced a new two-year visa for Chinese nations wishing to visit the country. Beginning on Monday, it will enable visitors from China to make multiple trips to the UK for longer periods, the government said in a statement.
Low-cost accommodation drives London hotel boom
The number of hotel rooms in London is expected to grow by 12 per cent over the next three years according to new data compiled by London & Partners and AM:PM, with the increase being driven by an uplift in budget and five star hotel accommodation across the capital. These new properties and hotel extensions will add 17,769 more rooms across the capital over the same period, up from the current figure of 138,769.
UK to cut visa costs for Chinese visitors
UK prime minister David Cameron has announced a number of reforms to visa processing for Chinese visitors to the UK as part of the Chinese premier Xi Jinping’s visit to London. Key among these is that, from January 2016, two year multiple entry visas for Chinese visitors will be reduced from £324 to £85 – the cost of a standard six month visa.
London breaks visitor records in 2015 second quarter
London’s tourism boom has continued during the second quarter of 2015, with the city welcoming a record 5.1 million international visitors between April and June this year, six per cent more than the same period last year, according to the Office for National Statistics International Passenger Survey. Tourist spending over the same period was £3.2 billion, an eight per cent increase compared with the second quarter of 2014.
