UAE events/exhibitions attract over 3.8m visitors in 2010
Exhibitions, conferences and trade shows in the UAE attracted more than 3.8 million visitors in 2010, contributing millions of dollars to the local economy while the region’s multitude of events continues to grow.

The SME (small and medium enterprises) sector employs more than 50 per cent of the UAE workforce, according to an international management and marketing expert, who added that SMEs are important in creating new jobs and enhancing growth of any economy.

UAE withdraws BlackBerry ban threat
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have withdrawn proposals to bar certain functions from BlackBerry handsets used in the country. Following discussions with maker Research in Motion, the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority confirmed the ban – which was due to come into effect later this week – would not now go ahead.
Dubai continues to recover from downturn
Luxury Middle Eastern destination Dubai has continued to recover from the global economic downturn, with visitor numbers increasing significantly in early 2010. Meanwhile a new report has found the UAE will account for the vast majority of tourism spending in the Gulf over the next eight years.
Saudi Arabia follows UAE BlackBerry ban
Saudi Arabia has confirmed telecoms firms in the country will be forced to block the messenger function from BlackBerry smartphones from Friday. Following the lead the UAE, the Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission said the ban would last until the state’s three mobile phone operators “fulfil the regulatory requirements it has requested”.
Gulf states move on BlackBerry ban
Saudi Arabia is set to follow the United Arab Emirates in banning the use of certain functions of BlackBerry smart phones. Citing security concerns, officials in the UAE said a ban would come into force in October, preventing users from accessing instant messaging, email and web-browsing services.
