Outbound travel activity from the UK has been hardest hit in Europe in 2009, according to the latest trend report from ITB. The UK market fell 15%, followed by Russia at 12% lower. Austria was the only nation to report gains, up by 2%.

The German advertising industry has identified its major target group as consumers between the ages of 14 and 49, who wield significant purchasing power. However, in a few years time the powerful travel industry will no longer conform to this pattern. According to findings by the ADAC Reisemonitor, by 2020 every second holidaymaker will have passed the age of 50.

Internet bookings are set to surge in the downturn, according to new predictions in the latest trends report from ITB Berlin.The demand for domestic travel will stay stable or grow, as will the demand for low-cost flights, but long-haul will fall sharply, and there will be much pain felt in thebusiness travel and MICE sectors.
ITB Day Two - WTTC cuts tourism growth forecasts
The second day of ITB Berlin 2009 proved even busier than the first as the travel industry united in strength to battle the downturn.The World Travel & Tourism Council also chose day two to unveil the results of its 2009 Economic Impact Research, which is widely-regarded as one of the most accurate barometers of things to come.
ITB Berlin opens in style
The travel industry put on a show of strength on the opening day of ITB Berlin 2009. This year’s show, which has been fully booked since February, featured over 11,098 exhibitors (compared to 11,147 last year) - no mean feat given the global economic climate over the past 12 months.Highlight of day one belonged to reigning Miss World, Ksenia Sukhinova, who brought the ICC to a virtual standstill as she breezed elegantly through the exhibition halls. The Russian beauty won the coveted beauty contest in December in Johannesburg. She dropped by the South Africa Tourism stand to catch up with friends, pose for photos with fans, and also see how preparations for the Confederations Cup 2009 and Fifa 2010 were progressing.
