With the FIFA World Cup secured Qatar has shifted its footballing ambitions, with Manchester United thought to be the next target. According to reports, Qatar Holding – the sovereign wealth fund of the Middle Eastern state - has set aside some £2.5 billion for the deal.
Virgin America links up with Emirates
California-based Virgin America has signed an interline agreement with Emirates, the Dubai-based international carrier. The deal will see US travellers offered seamless travel on the networks of each carrier, with passengers offered the option to book flights through Emirates with connecting services on Virgin America.

Airlines seek compromise on export-credit financing
Leading airlines – including Ryanair, Emirates, Etihad and Korean Air – have sought to diffuse a growing row over so-called export-credit financing. Speaking at Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development talks in Paris the group argued for the extension of export credits to all airlines in the US and Europe, irrespective of whether they are based in a country which manufactures aircraft.
Emirates teams up with Dubai hotels for FIFA Club World Cup
For the second consecutive year, Abu Dhabi will host the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2010. Emirates Airline has teamed up with hotels in Dubai to make it easy to explore the two dynamic cities and attend the highly-anticipated matches this year. Participating in the tournament, scheduled for 8-18 December 2010, are club champions from six continents, as well as the UAE domestic league champions.
Emirates strikes deal with JetBlue
Emirates Airline has struck an interline agreement with JetBlue Airways which will see travellers offered seamless connections to cities across the globe via New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Over the next few days, customers will be able to purchase joint Emirates-JetBlue itineraries via the GDS, online travel agencies, and by calling Emirates reservations.
Surging demand pushes up Emirates profits
Emirates saw profits skyrocket during the first half of the financial year, with the Dubai-based airline recording a net profit of $925 million. This is compared to a figure of $205 million for the same period in 2009, representing a 351 per cent increase.
Emirates rejects state subsidy claims
Emirates chairman Tim Clarke has angrily rejected claims made by Air France chief executive Henri Gourgeon suggesting the airline accepts government subsidies. Mr Gourgeon warned earlier this week Europe’s status as an air travel hub was “under threat” from emerging Middle Eastern carriers.
Emirates increases Saudi services
Emirates is to increase flights from Dubai to Al Medinah al Munawarah in Saudi Arabia to seven flights per week from 31 October 2010 due to the growing importance of economic and cultural ties between the two nations.
