New Zealand tourism “open for business” after massive earthquake
Tourism New Zealand has stressed that the country remains “open for business” despite a massive earthquake that struck the city Christchurch over the weekend. The 7.1 earthquake caused the ground to shift by up to 11 feet, and was larger than the one that killed 200,000 people in Haiti earlier this year.
Earthquake hits Oaxaca in Mexico
A strong earthquake – measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale - hit the Mexican state of Oaxaca at 02:22 this morning according to the United States Geological Survey. A further quake was also recorded on the San Andreas Fault in California, while the island of Fiji was also hit.
Indonesia quake toll jumps to 17
Jakarta - The death toll from last week’s powerful earthquakes that struck Indonesia’s easternmost province of Papua has risen to 17, the National Disaster Management Agency said Monday.
Travellers warned against Samoa trips
The U.K.‘s Foreign Office (FCO) is advising against all but essential travel to Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga, a day after a series of earthquakes and a tsunami flattened villages, and swept people and cars out to sea.
