BA/AA tie-up dealt bitter blow
British Airways and American Airlines have been dealt a bitter blow by the U.S. Department of Justice, which has ruled that their proposed tie-up would result in “competitive harm” and lead to transatlantic fares rising by as much as 15 percent. It has recommended major concessions in return for granting anti-trust immunity.

American Airlines, a founding member of the oneworld® Alliance, today praised U.S. and Japanese government negotiators for reaching an agreement on Open Skies that will establish and foster a healthy global aviation framework in the Pacific Rim and replace the existing bilateral agreement that has governed aviation between the U.S. and Japan since 1952.
US airlines passenger numbers up
Four of the US’s biggest airlines saw passenger numbers increase last month compared to November 2008. Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Continental Airlines and Jet Blue Airways carried between them almost 20m passengers – up from 19.12 a year ago.

American Airlines has stepped up its bidding war with Delta Airlines for a controlling stake in Japan Airlines by offering a US$1.1bn sweetener. Much of the injection is being fronted by TPG, a private equity group. This follows Delta’s attempt to lure the debt-riddled carrier from oneworld by offering US$500m in new equity, plus another US$500m in asset-backed funding.
