Alaska Airlines is inviting residents across the state to join in celebrating Alaska Day on Oct. 18. Daylong festivities will be held at nine airports and three community locations in honour of the formal transfer of the territory of Alaska from Russia to the United States at Fort Sitka on Oct. 18, 1867.

Alaska Airlines has launched a Facebook application called FlyingSocial™, which allows users to plan travel to visit their friends around the country. With the new app, users can view a map populated with photos of their Facebook friends located in cities Alaska Airlines flies and, with a click, can view one-way fares or mileage award levels to the closest airport near their friend’s hometown.

Alaska Airlines announced today it is expanding its service between San Diego and Hawaii with a daily nonstop flight to Honolulu. The service begins Nov. 17, 2011, and complements the airline’s existing daily nonstop flight between San Diego and Kahului, Maui, which started in October 2010.

Alaska Airlines’ Gogo® Inflight Internet service is now available on nearly all aircraft in its fleet. With the installation of the service scheduled for completion later this month, Alaska’s fleet will be 92 percent Wi-Fi equipped, which includes its 737-800 and –900 aircraft flying predominantly longer routes. Only seven of the airline’s 117 Boeing 737s will not offer Wi-Fi, including its freighter and combi (part-passenger/part-freight) aircraft and three 737-400s.
