Replacement engines ordered for A380 fleet

Plans are being drawn up to replace as many as 40 Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines on Airbus A380 aircraft around the world, according to Australian airline Qantas. The superjumbos have come under the spotlight in recent weeks following an engine failure on Qantas Flight QF32 which forced the aircraft into an emergency landing in Singapore.

Singapore Airlines has temporarily grounded its fleet of A380 aircraft following a directive from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) legally ordering operators to comply with a Rolls Royce service bulletin. Issued on Monday this week, the bulletin requires all Trent 900 engines to be checked.

An Airbus A380 operated by Emirates has arrived at Manchester Airport – making the city the first regional destination to receive the superjumbo. The airport spent £10 million preparing for the arrival, which marks the inauguration of a daily flight between the north of England and Dubai.

Emirates has placed an order for 32 superjumbos worth $11.5 billion on the opening day of the Berlin Air Show. The deal takes the Dubai carrier’s total Airbus A380 fleet on order to 90, and comes as it predicts profits this year will break the $1bn mark.

French low-cost carrier Air Austral has placed the first orders for an A380 configured to carry more than 800 passengers. The two economy-only jets will fly from Paris to the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean with 840 passengers on board the double-decker aircraft.
