Oman: Almouj Golf formally opened

Putting Oman firmly on the international golf map, Almouj Golf, a Greg Norman signature 18-hole PGA Standard links golf course at The Wave, Muscat, Oman’s premier lifestyle destination, was formally opened under the auspices of His Highness Sayyid Taimur bin As’ad al Said.

The opening of this outstanding course marks the completion of a two-year staged development process to develop the distinctive course architecture, comprising Oman’s first signature championship course and first floodlit golf course, the 9-hole par 3 and the first golf academy in the Sultanate. The event was attended by dignitaries, representatives of both the government and private sectors along with the legendary golfer Greg Norman.
“Almouj Golf is a world-class sporting, tourism and leisure asset for the city of Muscat, and one which we are truly proud to have on our doorstep. This milestone has been achieved in close co-operation with other organisations, governmental and private, to support and promote the sport within the Sultanate with the aim to develop the first generation of Omani golfers to represent our country in the international arena,” Sultan bin Hamdoon al Harthy, Chairman of The Wave, Muscat, said in his opening address.

Almouj Golf is the first Professional Golf Association standard 18-hole golf course in Oman and aims to be one of the 100 top golf courses in the world. The facilities include a championship course, specialist state-of-the-art golf Academy and floodlit driving range and par 3 course where golfing enthusiasts can practice their game into the evening. “Yet, in developing this world-class vision, the development process stayed true to the principles of sustainable environmental design and responsible tourism, taking utmost care to protect the indigenous Omani flora and fauna on the development site itself”, Al Harthy added.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Greg Norman commented: “It is a pleasure to officially open Almouj Golf here in Muscat, and to see the final product. I believe that, as the Sultanate’s first championship course, Almouj Golf is leading the way for golf in the country and I am proud to have played a role in developing Oman’s golfing talent. This is a beautiful course set within even more stunning surroundings and I wish all who come to play here a challenging and enjoyable round.”

The Sultanate is getting all set to host international golf events, according to the management of the Almouj Golf. “We are working out the modalities of inviting and conducting major international golf events including the European Union Tour at the Almouj Golf,” Abdullah al Shidi, Deputy CEO, The Wave, said. “These golf events will be an expansion of the regional golf events being held in the GCC from time to time,” he added. In terms of training and spreading awareness of golf in the country among the young population, he said programmes are currently on to train and develop golf as a game in the country among the local populace.
