MAGALUF COMPLETES THE TRANSFORMATION OF ITS SEAFRONT PROMENADE
Magaluf has marked another significant milestone in its long-term regeneration with the official inauguration of the transformed Gabriel Escarrer Julià Seafront Promenade, celebrating the completion of a two-phase redevelopment project that has reimagined one of the resort’s most iconic public spaces.
The transformation began in November 2024, when Calvià Town Hall launched the first phase of the redevelopment, delivering 650 metres of new seafront promenade as part of the ‘Magaluf for All’ initiative. The project introduced low-impact dune systems, drought-resistant planting, new palm tress and innovative water management infrastructure, creating a more sustainable and environmentally sensitive public space while preserving uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean.
The landmark project reinforces Magaluf’s continued evolution into a modern Mediterranean destination, combining high-quality public spaces, sustainability and accessibility with a growing focus on culture, gastronomy, sport and year-round tourism.
Stretching 2.3 kilometres along the coastline, the transformed promenade offers a vibrant, fully accessible waterfront designed for both residents and visitors. The redevelopment includes upgraded pedestrian areas, improved accessibility, enhanced public spaces and stronger connections throughout the beachfront, creating a more welcoming environment while encouraging visitors to spend more time exploring the destination.
The project also includes the refurbishment of Francesc Pujol Terrasa Street and improvements to surrounding public areas, further enhancing the overall visitor experience while supporting Calvià’s long-term vision for sustainable tourism.
The second phase, officially inaugurated on 20 May 2026, delivered a further 286 metres of redeveloped promenade alongside improvement to Francesc Pujol Terrasa Street and Miguel Altoaguirre Street. Supported by €3 million from the Balearic Islands’ Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS), the full redevelopment represents a €6.2 million investment, co-financed through ITS funding and the European Union’s Next GenerationEU recovery programme.

Throughout both phases, sustainability has remained at the heart of the project. Protected dune systems planted with native species, rainwater collection and treatment systems, and seawater-fed beach showers have been introduced to minimise water consumption while preserving the area’s natural environment.
Delivered through investment from Spain’s Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) and the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery programme, the redevelopment forms part of Calvià‘s wider strategy to diversify its tourism offer, extend the visitor season beyond the traditional summer months and create a destination that benefits both residents and visitors alike.
Juan Antonio Amengual, Mayor of Calvià, said:
“The completion of the Gabriel Escarrer Julià Promenade marks another important step in Magaluf’s regeneration. This investment reflects our commitment to creating high-quality public spaces that improve quality of life for residents while enhancing the visitor experience. Together with wider investment across the municipality, projects like this are helping to position Calvià as a sustainable, year-round destination that looks confidently towards the future.”
The promenade is named after Gabriel Escarrer Julià, founder of Meliá Hotels International, recognising his longstanding contribution to the development of tourism in Magaluf and his vision for the destination’s future.
More than a new promenade, the project represents another tangible milestone in Magaluf’s ongoing regeneration, reflecting years of sustained investment that continue to enhance the destination while strengthening its appeal to a broader range of visitors.
A celebration of Magaluf’s new chapter
To celebrate the transformation of Magaluf, symbolised by the completion of its new seafront promenade, Calvià hosted its largest public celebration in recent years. Supported by funding from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS), the weekend programme showcased the destination’s growing cultural and experiential offer while inviting residents and visitors to enjoy the renewed waterfront.
The new promenade was officially inaugurated on Saturday 27th June with a spectacular public celebration featuring an open-air concert by the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra and an innovative drone show over Magaluf Bay. Welcoming over 9,500 people, it was the largest turnout achieved for a free, publicly funded event in Calvià.
As part of the Calvià is Cinema, iconic film scores were performed including Star Wars, Schindler’s List, and the Sound of Music, before 400 synchronised drones illuminated the night sky in a celebration of the destination’s transformation.
The celebrations continued throughout the weekend alongside the second edition of GastroFira Magaluf, with around a dozen restaurants along the promenade offering special menus and culinary experiences that highlighted the destination’s evolving gastronomic scene.
Sunday’s programme welcomed the Atlántida Mallorca Film Fest to Calvia for the first time, with free screenings followed by live music performances.
The inauguration also forms part of Calvià‘s Year of Cinema 2026, celebrating the municipality’s rich audiovisual heritage while reinforcing its growing reputation as a destination for culture, creativity and year-round tourism.
Together, the weekend’s events reinforced the cultural and experiential positioning of Magaluf’s renewed seafront, encouraging thousands of Mallorcans and visitors to rediscover Magaluf and establishing it as a vibrant gathering place for residents and visitors and a fitting stage for world-class events throughout the year.
