Four new Lufthansa destinations – more than three quarters of European routes excluding Frankfurt and Munich transferred to Germanwings

Flights to Tokyo city airport Haneda, four new long-haul services, additional Mediterranean destinations and the continued transfer of Lufthansa direct connections to Germanwings: these are the main highlights of the 2014 summer flight timetable. For Lufthansa it includes the four new destinations Jakarta, Tokyo-Haneda, Bodrum and Lamezia Terme. Compared with the 2013 summer flight timetable, Lufthansa and Germanwings have expanded capacity by five percent, as measured in available seat-kilometres. Customers of Lufthansa and Germanwings can choose from a total of 235 destinations in 78 countries in the 2014 summer flight timetable. It is valid from Sunday, 30 March to Saturday, 25 October 2014.

Germanwings to take off from Düsseldorf as of 30 March
The handover of direct flights from Lufthansa to Germanwings is also proceeding to plan, in several stages. The connections include those routes that do not operate through Lufthansa’s Frankfurt and Munich hubs. No fewer than three quarters of the planned connections will be flown by Germanwings in summer 2014. In Hamburg Germanwings recently took over the routes to Paris and London, bringing the total number of destinations served from Hamburg to 24. The handover of routes to Germanwings is now complete in Hamburg, as is already the case in Stuttgart and Cologne/Bonn. In Berlin the majority of routes have been successively transferred to Germanwings in recent months. The remaining direct routes flown by Lufthansa from Berlin-Tegel are to be transferred to Germanwings in the summer. Passengers will then be able to fly non-stop with Germanwings from the River Spree to over 40 destinations.

The first day of the summer flight timetable on 30 March 2014 is also the date set for the handover of Lufthansa direct flights in Düsseldorf. As of this date, 22 Lufthansa destina-tions will be served by Germanwings. Other routes, including some new ones, are to follow from the North Rhine-Westphalia hub over the course of the year. Düsseldorf will be the largest Germanwings station, with 68 destinations planned. Long-haul connections to New York/Newark (daily) and Chicago (5 flights a week), as well as the routes to Frankfurt and Munich will still be flown by Lufthansa.

New routes from Rhine/Main to Southeast Asia and America
In the summer timetable of Lufthansa the range of flights to Southeast Asia will be improved substantially. From 30 March five weekly services (no service on Tuesdays or Wednesdays) will be offered non-stop from Frankfurt to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. From 31 May this flight will continue to Jakarta, Indonesia. In addition, passengers can fly to Montreal in Canada not only from Munich but now also from Frankfurt. This flight operates as summer service five times per week.

Munich gets two new long-haul routes
There are new travel options from Munich too. Passengers can now fly non-stop to Mexico City from here as well as from Frankfurt. The Airbus A340-600 serves the new route five times a week (no service on Mondays and Wednesdays). A new flight will soon be offered between Munich and Toronto –operated with an Airbus A330 and equipped with the new First and Business Class. This daily flight supplements the Frankfurt service during summer, and thus offering two daily flight options to Canada’s leading financial metropolis.

Lufthansa to fly to the hub of All Nippon Airways, its partner carrier
With the change of flight timetable Lufthansa will mainly be flying to Haneda Airport (IATA Code: HND) in Tokyo. Japan’s biggest airport is situated just 14 kilometres to the south of the capital, making it fast and easy to get to the city center. From 30 March 2014 Lufthansa will be flying non-stop from Frankfurt and Munich to Tokyo-Haneda daily. Tokyo-Haneda also offers outstanding connections to the domestic Japanese route network of Lufthansa’s partner airline and joint venture partner All Nippon Airways (ANA). Lufthansa passengers in Haneda will be able to choose from a wide range of transfer connections to over 40 domestic Japanese destinations. The main connections will also be available for booking as code-share services with a Lufthansa flight number. Lufthansa’s existing destination airport Tokyo-Narita will remain part of the route network with one daily flight.

Six new long-haul aircraft
Lufthansa is modernising its long-haul fleet and during the summer timetable alone will be adding seven new intercontinental aircraft to the fleet, which are more fuel-efficient and much quieter: Two new Airbus A380 will make it possible to extend the summer service on the routes from Frankfurt to New York (JFK), Beijing and San Francisco. Lufthansa will then operate a total of twelve A380 airliners. The Boeing 747-8 fleet will also see further rapid growth by the autumn, with four new aircraft bringing the total to 14. For the first time passengers will be able to enjoy the comfort of the “Queen of the Skies” also on flights from Frankfurt to São Paulo in Brazil. From the summer the new jumbo jet will even be flying twice daily to Los Angeles.

Non-stop to the beach
In Europe Lufthansa is expanding its route network to popular holiday destinations. For the first time Lufthansa will be flying from Munich to two new Mediterranean destinations that are very popular with holidaymakers: Lamezia Terme in the southern Italian region of Calabria and Bodrum in southwest Turkey. Both of these coastal cities are very closely situated to attractive seaside resorts, which can be accessed easily.
The Spanish coastal city of Valencia will also have a daily connection to Frankfurt in the summer timetable. The new route is in addition to the existing connections from Düsseldorf and Munich. A new seasonal service operating on Saturdays during summer 2014 also makes it possible to get to Montpellier in the south of France non-stop in 90 minutes from Frankfurt as well as from Munich.
