London 2012 confirms Olympic Flame Torchbearers and street route

The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has confirmed over 7,300 inspiring people who will be carrying the Flame in the Olympic Torch Relay.

The Torchbearers include those that were successful through the public nomination processes run by LOCOG and the Presenting Partners, Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.

Each Torchbearer has received confirmation of the day and in which community they will be carrying the Flame.

An average of 115 Torchbearers a day will carry the Flame during its 8,000-mile journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on July 27th at the Olympic Opening Ceremony.

The remaining Torchbearers will be confirmed over the coming months.
The streets along which the Torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame have also been revealed, enabling local people to plan for celebrations.

An online map gives street-by-street details as the Flame travels through more than 1,000 communities announced at the end of last year.

LOCOG has worked closely with representatives from each nation and region of the UK to devise the route, and is taking the Flame to within ten miles of over 95 per cent of the population.

Route plans for the final two days in London will be confirmed in the next month.

Moment to shine

LOCOG chair, Seb Coe, said: “Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life.

“The Flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets.

“Now people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along and who is running in which community, they can start planning in detail how they will celebrate the Torch coming to them and truly make it their moment to shine.”

Those who sign up as Local Leaders will receive tips and tools to help get their friends, family and neighbours to line the streets to welcome the Flame as it comes to their local community.

Torchbearer uniform

The uniform that the 8,000 Torchbearers will wear has also been unveiled today.

Designed with the help of London 2012’s official sportswear provider adidas, the uniform celebrates the role of the Torchbearer.

It is white with gold shards representing the Flame’s energy at the shoulder and neckline.

Gold shards are also used at the elbow to focus the eye on the arm, as well as down to the cuff and the hand holding the Torch.
