Lisbon up for top honours at World Travel Awards
Lisbon, one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan and fascinating cities, has been nominated in four categories at the 19th annual World Travel Awards, due to take place this October.
The Portuguese capital has been nominated for awards in the following categories: Europe’s Leading Destination, Europe’s Leading City Break Destination, Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination and Europe’s Leading Cruise Port.
The World Travel Awards are highly prestigious and are considered to be the ‘Oscars’ of tourism.
Voting for the awards is open online until September 14th, with the awards being delivered at a ceremony in the Algarve on October 6th.
The event continues to attract the most important decision-makers in global travel as they compete for the most revered accolades in the industry.
Lisbon is competing in categories that the city has previously been nominated for in the past, notably in 2010 with nominations for Europe’s Leading City Break Destination and last year with awards for Best European Destination, Europe’s Leading City Break Destination and Europe’s Leading Cruise Port.
Lisbon’s previous victories at the awards include winning Europe’s Leading City Break Destination in both 2009 and 2010, as well as, winning Europe’s Leading Destination and Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination in 2009.
With the city’s unique atmosphere, beaches located only 20 minutes from the city centre, year-round sunshine, excellent gastronomy, the largest river in Europe and a 1000 years of history woven into every street it’s no wonder why.
Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards honour the best examples of good practice in the tourism industry on a global scale.
Voting is conducted online, by the general public and by more than 200,000 professional Travel Agencies and tourism, from 160 countries.
