Diver killed in suspected shark attack

A diver has been killed in a suspected shark attack in Rottnest Island off the coast of Western Australia.

The 32 year old US citizen, who had arrived in Australia earlier this year, had been diving alone when he was attacked by a three-metre shark, thought to be a Great White.

The attack occurred a kilometre from Rottnest, a popular holiday island near Perth, when the man had been diving alone from a 25-metre vessel.

The man’s name has not yet been released, but according to he was living in Australia on a working visa.

All beaches on Rottnest Island were closed on Saturday afternoon after the attack.

This is thought to be the second fatal shark attack in Western Australia in 12 days.

64 year old Bryn Martin was last seen 350m from shore at Cottesloe Beach on 10 October 10th. His swimming trunks have been retrieved with damages consistent with a shark attack.
