Overall, the data shows that travelers are booking hotel rooms closer to departure dates and making weekend getaways a popular choice. Reinforcing that travelers prefer to stay closer to home and take weekend driving-distance vacations, the PlacesToStay.com data reveals that the majority of travelers book hotels within 500 miles or less of their residence, with stays lasting approximately two days. Friday and Saturday stand out as the primary check-in days, while most bookings are made weekdays (Monday through Thursday). Also, more than 55 percent of hotel bookers choose their hotel within 10 days or less of check-in.

Within the U.S., most reservations are made for hotels in California, followed by Florida and New York. Reservations made for Monterey, Calif. hotels nearly doubled in a year, making it the fastest riser and most popular option among U.S. destination cities. Las Vegas, Orlando and Chicago all showed growth as well. Internationally, significant growth in reservations occurred in Paris and London.
