ATLANTA, Feb. 4, 2003 - Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) changed its excess baggage charges for overweight baggage, effective Feb. 1. Delta will now consider any bag weighing more than 50 pounds to be overweight, and will charge $25 for bags weighing between 51 and 70 pounds. Delta will continue to charge $80 for bags weighing 71 to 100 pounds. Bags that weigh more than 100 pounds are not accepted by Delta as checked baggage.
This new policy applies to passengers with tickets purchased on or after Feb. 1 who are traveling on Delta, Delta Express, Delta Shuttle, Atlantic Coast Airlines, Atlantic Southeast Airlines, Chautauqua Airlines, Comair, and SkyWest Airlines.

Platinum, Gold and Silver Medallion SkyMiles members, and Delta customers confirmed in the forward cabin are exempt from this policy and will not be charged for baggage weighing between 50 and 70 pounds. These passengers will continue to be charged for bags weighing more than 70 pounds. This new policy also does not apply to military duffel bags, military sea bags, or military B-4 bags up to 70 pounds. Additionally, it does not apply to sporting equipment, musical instruments, live animals, cabin baggage, media equipment or wheelchairs and assistive devices, which may be covered by other baggage policies.

These new weight guidelines are in addition to the piece and size allowances. Current excess guidelines for additional pieces and dimensional requirements remain unchanged.
