Carnival Time in Venice

Venice has chosen a highly original theme for the 2009 Carnival: six senses for six “sestieri” or city districts: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and mind for San Marco, Castello, San Polo, Cannaregio, Dorsoduro e Santa Croce. And so this year’s Carnival is called “Sensation.” From 13th to 24th February the city will be transformed - as it is every year - into a fairyland of endless colours, sounds and perfumes and to mark the celebrations the Palazzo Sant’Angelo on the Grand Canal has a very special offer that will allow visitors to delight in the magical Carnival atmosphere.

The star of the 2009 edition of the Carnival in Viareggio, which will run from 8th February to 1st March, will be Burlamacco, the official masked figure created by Uberto Bonetti in 1930. To mark the centenary of Bonetti’s birth the Carnival Foundation will pay homage to the Viareggio-born Futurist painter and graphic designer with the poster created by   Arnaldo Galli which, using images and colours, will recount the source of inspiration of that which, since 1931, has been the official masked figure of the Viareggio Carnival.    Visitors will not want to miss the processions of floats and they can be assured of the best views from the terraces of the Hotel Astor which has special Carnival weekend packages.
