Low-Cost Strategy Brings Success

Germanwings today announced strong half year results proving.  In the fist six months of 2005, more than 2.3 million passengers flew with Germanwings from its bases in Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart and Berlin-Schönefeld, exceeding the airline’s expectations.

Commenting on the half year results Dr Joachim Klein, Chairman of Germanwings’ Board of Directors, said: “Continued strong growth has allowed us to increase our passenger numbers by more than 60% over the previous year.  In 2005, we are aiming to transport between 5.5 and 6 million guests and in July alone, we expect to exceed the magic figure of 500,000 passengers for the month.

“Because of our favourable business development, turnover also increased by 60% compared with the same period last year to 163 Euros.  If our growth continues this strongly, Germanwings should achieve a turnover of approximately 400 million Euros by the end of the year, compared to 2004’s turnover of 247 million Euros.  Aircraft utilisation was also greater in the first six months of this year than during the same period last year.  Seat occupancy rose by 2.8% to reach an average of 83%.”
