Cardiologist Dr. Conville Brown said the prime minister was making an excellent recovery and was expected to be transferred from intensive care into the general ward on Wednesday.

Christie, who led his Progressive Liberal Party to victory in the 2002 general election, was expected to be released from the hospital this week, according to hospital officials.

He was expected to be on reduced duties for at least a month, with Deputy Prime Minister Cynthia Pratt taking on some of his workload.
