St. Kitts to construct second cruise pier

Advancing the island’s efforts to establish itself as a leading Caribbean
cruise destination, St. Kitts has announced that it plans to construct a
second cruise pier at Port Zante and add new stores to the Pier’s existing collection of shops.
Construction on the new pier is expected to be completed by September 2005. Upon completion, the pier will measure 1,434 feet in length and boast sufficient draught, or depth, to accommodate any of today’s largest ships. The new pier will position St. Kitts to accommodate as many as four megaships or higher combinations of smaller vessels between the two Port Zante piers.

In addition, agreements have been signed to further enhance the offerings of Port Zante with the establishment of Boolchand’s, Kay Jewelers and other top quality stores there.

These shops will compliment the existing stores at Port Zante and give both cruise passengers and stayover tourists additional shopping options.

“The addition of a new cruise ship pier at Port Zante is the next logical step for St. Kitts,” said the Hon. Ricky Skerritt, Minister of Tourism, Commerce and Consumer Affairs. “While enhancing our existing cruise pier, the development of Port Zante serves to advance our tourism offerings, benefiting both travelers and the local economy, which will see a boost in revenue from the increased capacity to welcome cruise ship passengers.”
